Measure the work point, then pick the smallest machine below that covers it and fits your access, ground and load. Some machines are rated lower outdoors than indoors.

Indoor and outdoor working heights
Some machines carry a lower height or occupant rating outdoors because of wind. The single working height in the tables above is the maximum figure on the record. These machines have a different outdoor rating on their manufacturer sheets:

For outdoor work, read the outdoor figure. Indoor-only machines must not be used outside at all. The rating for the actual unit is on its decal and in the manual; ask us if you are unsure.
How to read it
- Working height assumes a person standing on the deck. Plan against the work point, not the machine name.
- Width decides whether the machine fits the route. Measure the narrowest clear opening, including door hardware and frames; see width and site access checks.
- Weight decides floors and transport. Suspended slabs, ramps and lifts need checking against the machine weight; see machine weight and floor loading.
- Platform capacity covers everything on the platform: people, tools and materials. Extension decks usually have a lower limit, stated on each machine page.
Work points and machine classes
These are starting points only; the work point you measure decides.
- Ceiling grids and retail lighting, about 4 to 6 m: 19ft scissor class
- Warehouse lighting and cable tray, about 6 to 7.5 m: 19ft class
- High-bay retail and mezzanine services, about 8 to 10 m: 22ft tracked or 26ft narrow (check the outdoor rating)
- Factory ceilings and high racking indoors, about 10 to 13.5 m: 40ft electric
- Outdoor structures on site ground, about 9 to 11.5 m: diesel rough terrain scissor
- Over awnings, parapets or plant: a boom lift, chosen from its reach chart

What does working height mean?
Platform height plus about 2 m of standing reach: the height your hands can work at. Scissor lift names such as 19ft or 26ft refer to the platform height.
Is a 19ft scissor lift actually 19 feet?
The platform is about 5.8 m, which is roughly 19 ft. Working height is about 7.8 m. Both are on the specification sheet.
Why do some machines have two heights?
Indoor and outdoor ratings differ where wind exposure applies. The 40ft S1212E-2 is rated 14.0 m indoors and 9.5 m outdoors on its sheet.
What if my work point is between sizes?
Take the smaller machine if it covers the point with a little margin; a larger machine costs more, weighs more and needs more access. When it is close, tell us the exact task height.
