Quick answer: measure the height of the actual work point, add nothing (reach is already counted in “working height”), then pick the smallest machine that covers it and fits through your narrowest access point. Height is only half the decision — width and floor loading rule out more machines than height does.
The two numbers that matter
- Platform height — where the deck floor sits at full elevation.
- Working height — platform height plus ~2m of standing reach. This is the number machines are named by.
A “19ft” machine (5.8m platform) gives roughly 7.8m working height — an average person can work on something ~7.5–8m off the ground. Don’t add your own reach on top; it’s already in the number. Measure the work point — the cable tray, the fitting, the sign — and buy comfort, not excess.

Width and doorways rule out more than height
Measure your narrowest access point — door, corridor, gate, lift car — before falling in love with a height number:
- JLG ES1932: 0.81m wide, 1.70m long, 1.99m stowed height (rails fold to 1.63m)
- LGMG S0607E II: 0.79m wide — the slimmest full-deck 19ft in the fleet
- Zoomlion ZS0808AC: 0.81m wide — a 26ft (10m indoor working height) that fits wherever a 19ft fits
- LGMG S1212E-2 (40ft): 1.19m wide, 2.65m high with rails up — it needs a proper opening and clear travel path
A machine that reaches the ceiling but can’t reach the room is the wrong machine. Ceilings cut the other way: stowed height must clear the doorway in, and full elevation must clear sprinklers and services above.
Floor loading and weight
Bigger machines are much heavier: 1,550kg (ES1932) → 1,610kg (S0607E II) → 1,600–1,820kg (tracked units) → 2,090kg (ZS0808AC narrow) → 2,940kg (S1212E-2) → 4,330kg (SR1018D with outriggers). On suspended slabs, mezzanines and old floors, confirm the slab rating before hiring the big unit — the spec sheets list ground-bearing pressure (the ES1932 runs 8.0 kg/cm²). Slab, terrain and power
Sizing assumes the machine can actually sit at the work point:
- Polished slab indoors → electric slab scissor, non-marking tyres.
- Compacted fill, site ground, grass → rough terrain or tracked — a slab machine will bog or tip-limit.
- Mixed indoor/outdoor → note that outdoor height ratings can be lower: the S1212E-2 is a 14m machine indoors but 9.5m outdoors (wind exposure governs). Full comparison: Electric vs Diesel Scissor Lifts.
Deck size and capacity
More height usually buys more deck and capacity — 230kg on the 19ft electrics (120kg on the extension), 320kg on the 40ft, 454kg and four people on the 32ft RT. Count people + tools + materials honestly; the load plate is a hard limit, and the deck extension always carries less than the main deck.
Why “biggest just in case” backfires
Bigger machines cost more, weigh more (floor loading), need wider access, and are slower to reposition. Over-sizing also creates new risks — congestion, support loads, awkward manoeuvring — without making the job faster. The right-size machine is cheaper and quicker. FAQs
Is a 19ft scissor lift enough for warehouse lights? Often, for lower warehouse and retail lighting — but size from the actual fitting height, not the building type. High-bay racking areas usually need 26–40ft.
What’s the difference between platform height and working height? Platform height is the deck floor; working height adds ~2m of standing reach. Plan against working height, name-check both on the spec sheet.
Should I size to the highest point on site? No — size to the real task areas. If one task is higher, price a second machine; two right-sized machines often beat one oversized one on cost and speed.
Why does width matter so much? Because doors, aisles, gates and lift cars rule machines out before height ever does. Our 19ft units fit standard doorways at 0.79–0.81m wide.
Do bigger scissor lifts always carry more? Usually but not always — capacity is model-specific. Check the plate: 230kg (19ft) to 454kg (32ft RT) across our fleet.
Can I use a slab scissor lift outdoors? Some are outdoor-rated in limited conditions (the S0607E II and ES1932 are rated for one occupant outdoors) — but never on soft or uneven ground, and wind limits apply. Check the model’s rating.
When should I choose rough-terrain or tracked instead? When the surface is unsealed, uneven, soft or landscaped — or the route to the work area is. See the Tracked Scissor Lift Guide.
Does bigger mean safer? No. Oversized machines add floor load, access risk and congestion. The safest machine is the one that fits the task, the access and the surface.
Should I check slab loading before choosing size? Yes — especially suspended slabs, mezzanines and old floors. Machine weight quadruples across the size range (1,550kg → 4,330kg in our fleet).
