Quick answer: the site decides, machine by machine. Finished floors, occupied buildings and night work usually suit a battery electric scissor lift. Unsealed ground, open construction sites and more outdoor height usually suit a diesel rough terrain machine. Uneven or sloping ground can suit a tracked machine, but our tracked range is not all battery electric: two run on batteries and both Athenas run tethered on 15 amp mains or on diesel. Tell us the ground, the power on site and whether any work is outside, and we will match the model.
Battery, mains and diesel are different
- Battery electric (for example the JLG ES1932 and LGMG S0607E II): no exhaust at the point of use and quiet. It runs on its batteries and needs a charging plan.
- Tethered mains electric (both Athena tracked machines we hire): runs only while plugged in to a 15 amp outlet within reach of its lead. There is no on-board battery to charge.
- Diesel (the LGMG SR1018D, and the Athenas when there is no 15 amp outlet): for open air. Exhaust and noise rule diesel out of enclosed or occupied spaces unless the site’s own controls allow it.
Floors and terrain
- Wheeled electric scissor lifts are built for hard, level surfaces. Our slim 19ft models are 0.79 to 0.81 m wide; measure your opening against the exact model rather than assuming a doorway fits.
- Diesel rough terrain scissor lifts have larger tyres, four-wheel drive and real gradeability. The SR1018D manages 35 per cent stowed and has auto-levelling outriggers for set-up on imperfect ground.
- A slab machine on site ground can bog or hit its tilt cut-out. A rough terrain machine on a polished floor is oversized and heavy (4,330 kg for the SR1018D).
Match the ground and outdoor rating
Wind changes what a raised platform may do, so outdoor ratings are often lower than indoor ones, in height, in occupants or both. For example, the LGMG SC0610EL-2 is rated 8.8 m working height indoors with two people and 7.5 m outdoors with one. The SR1018D reaches 11.7 m working height and is built for outdoor use. If your job is outdoor height work, check the outdoor figure for the model, not the headline. More in wind limits and weather for EWPs.
Capacity and deck size
The diesel rough terrain machine usually wins on load: the SR1018D carries 454 kg, with up to four people indoors and two outdoors, on a large deck with an extension. Electric scissor lift capacities vary by model and are on each machine page. Count people, tools and materials against the plate for the machine you hire.
Runtime: charging, mains or refuelling
- Battery electric: plan overnight charging from a suitable outlet near where the machine parks, and a charging window for multi-shift work. See the charging guide.
- Tethered mains: plan the 15 amp outlet, the lead route and how far the work runs from the outlet.
- Diesel: confirm refuelling for longer hires, and never refuel indoors.
Tracked machines
On sloping or uneven ground, gravel, dirt and light mud, rubber tracks spread the load where wheels struggle. Tracks do not make weak ground suitable, and lawns and pavers still need checking first, so send us the surface and photos of the route. Two of our tracked machines are battery electric (Zoomlion ZS0612C and LGMG SC0610EL-2); the two Athenas run on 15 amp mains or diesel. Compare them in the tracked scissor lift hire guide and tracked vs rough terrain scissor lifts.
Common mistakes
- Hiring diesel “for power” on a job that is entirely on slab.
- Hiring a slab electric for unsealed ground because it is cheaper.
- Ignoring the outdoor height rating.
- No charging plan on night work, or no 15 amp outlet for a tethered machine.
Selection checklist
- Enclosed or occupied space anywhere in the job?
- Ground: slab, unsealed, uneven or sloping?
- Outdoor height needed against the model’s outdoor rating
- People, tools and materials against the plate
- Access width and floor loading for the heavier machine
- Power: charging point, 15 amp outlet near the work, or refuelling
- Site noise and emission rules
FAQs
Which is better indoors? Usually battery electric: quiet, no exhaust, non-marking tyres. Measure the access against the exact model.
Which is better on rough ground? Diesel rough terrain, with four-wheel drive, 35 per cent gradeability and outriggers on our SR1018D. Slab electrics do not belong on site ground.
Are all tracked scissor lifts electric? No. On our fleet two are battery electric and the two Athenas run on 15 amp mains or diesel, with no on-board battery.
Can electric scissor lifts be used outdoors? Many are rated for it with limits, often fewer occupants and a lower height. Check the model’s outdoor rating and wind limit.
Do battery machines need daily charging? Plan for overnight charging every night of the hire.
Is diesel safer in bad weather? No. Wind limits, saturated ground and visibility affect every machine.
Figures are from the manufacturer specification sheets on each machine page. Confirm the exact machine before you book.
