Diesel boom lifts are built for site ground: compacted dirt, gravel and hardstand within the grade rating. Check the ground bearing under each wheel, because a boom concentrates load and reaching out shifts it.
A boom lift needs room to set up and swing as well as room to get in. Tell us the gate width, the ground under the machine and what the platform has to reach over, because outreach is what decides whether the machine can stand clear of the obstruction.
A boom type elevating work platform with a boom length of eleven metres or more needs a High Risk Work Licence in NSW. Boom length is not the same figure as working height, so the height on a page does not answer the licence question on its own.

In everyday Australian use, yes. Cherry picker is the common name for a boom type elevating work platform, which is what the industry calls a boom lift. The name comes from orchard work, where the first machines lifted a picker into the tree. Both names describe the same thing on this page.

An electric machine can, on a firm, level, sealed floor, and it is often the right answer when the work sits above racking or fixed plant. A diesel machine is an outdoor machine: the engine rules out enclosed spaces and lugged tyres mark a finished floor. A knuckle boom, also called an articulating boom, folds at one or more joints, so the platform can go up, over and back down again to clear a roof, an awning or fixed machinery. A straight or telescopic boom extends in one line, which gives more outreach for the same height but cannot reach over anything. The machines in this range are articulating.
Working height across the boom lifts we hire is 11.55 to 20.3 metres. Working height is where your hands reach, which is about two metres above the platform floor. Platform height is the deck itself, and it is the smaller figure in every specification.
Recorded machine width runs from 1.19 m to 2.29 m. The narrowest machine here is wider than a standard 0.82 m (820 mm) internal doorway, so it needs a double door, a roller shutter or a wider opening. Measure the clear opening rather than the door frame, and tell us the tightest point on the whole route in.
Between 4,854 kg and 10,700 kg. Weight decides two things: whether the floor or ground carries the machine, and what has to be on site to unload it. Ask us for the figure for a specific machine if a slab rating or a suspended floor is involved.
Platform capacity is 227 kg to 300 kg, and that figure includes the people on the platform as well as their tools and materials. Where a machine has a deck extension, the capacity on the extension is lower than the capacity on the main deck.
