Quick answer: start from the path the platform must travel, not the height. Need to go up and over something — awnings, parapets, plant, dock edges? Articulating (knuckle) boom. Need long, direct, repeated horizontal reach to an open face? Telescopic (straight) boom. Indoors or emission-sensitive? Compact electric boom. Then confirm ground, width, licence and wind.
The four questions that pick the machine
- Work-point height — what working height covers it?
- The obstacle — how high and how deep is the thing you must clear? That’s your up-and-over clearance and horizontal outreach requirement.
- The ground — slab, compacted fill, grass, slope? This decides tyres, drive and whether a boom is viable at all.
- The access — gates, height limits, soft driveways between truck and work area.
Articulating vs telescopic
An articulating (knuckle) boom folds at the riser and elbow with a jib on the end — it changes shape to snake over obstructions and place the basket beyond them, and slews (the AR11J turret rotates 355°) for fine positioning. A telescopic (stick) boom extends in a straight line — faster to position on open faces, often more outreach for the money, but it cannot bend over anything. The worked example: our 34ft knuckle boom
The LGMG AR11J is the boom in the Equip Hire fleet, and its spec sheet shows the numbers that matter when you’re matching a boom to a job:
- 12.75m working height // 10.75m platform height
- 6.78m horizontal outreach; 5.32m up-and-over clearance
- 270kg basket capacity, 2 people; 355° turntable rotation

Read your own job against those line items: if the awning is 4m high and 2m deep, 5.32m up-and-over with 6.78m outreach clears it with margin. If the obstacle is 7m high, this machine can’t go over it — tell us and we’ll source the right size rather than force the hire.
Power source and environment
- Diesel booms (like the AR11J) belong outdoors: fumes and noise rule them out of occupied indoor spaces.
- Electric and hybrid booms suit indoor and emission-sensitive work; many compact electric knuckle and mast booms are built for narrow access and finished floors. We don’t currently stock one — if your job needs it we’ll say so and help you spec the right class.

Ground, slopes and outriggers
Booms concentrate big loads through small footprints, and reach amplifies any lean. The spec numbers (gradeability, max operating slope, tyre type) only hold on ground that actually supports the machine — check fill, trenches, service pits and soft edges before delivery, and use spreader plates where the manual calls for them. Powerlines and exclusion zones
Working near overhead powerlines is the highest-stakes boom scenario. SafeWork NSW sets approach distances that vary with voltage and whether you’re an authorised person; plan the work so the machine plus full reach envelope stays outside them, use a safety observer (spotter) where required, and treat all lines as live. If the job is near lines, tell us at quote stage.
Licence, harness, rescue
- WP high risk work licence: required for boom-type EWPs with a boom length of 11m or more — the AR11J is in this class: operators need the WP ticket, or we can quote a licensed operator with the machine.
- Harness: operators in boom-type EWPs should wear a harness attached to the designated anchor point — the basket can be catapulted by ground movement even without tipping.

Typical jobs, matched honestly
- Signage and facades above awnings → knuckle boom (up-and-over is the whole job)
- Direct facade runs on an open elevation → telescopic boom, or a scissor if you can park under it
- Rooftop plant behind parapets → knuckle boom with enough up-and-over
- High corners inside a warehouse → compact electric boom, or often a 40ft scissor does it cheaper
- Tree work (where suitable), gardens, over fence lines → knuckle boom with rough-terrain tyres

Which boom is best for a warehouse? Usually a compact electric knuckle or mast boom — or no boom at all: a 40ft electric scissor often covers high warehouse work for less.
How do I avoid hiring the wrong height? Sketch the access path: where the machine parks, what it must clear, where the basket must land. Then check working height, outreach and up-and-over together — never height alone.
