Quick answer: most electrical work is straight-up work over a floor, which makes a compact battery electric scissor lift the usual starting point: no fumes, non-marking tyres and a deck for tools and cable. Size it by the actual fitting height, check the narrowest access against the exact model’s width, and count people, tools and cable against that machine’s rated platform load. Use a boom where something blocks the vertical line, such as an awning, veranda or plant.
Lighting and cable tray
- Ceilings and tray to about 7.5 m (retail, offices, many warehouses): a 19ft class electric, such as the JLG ES1932 (0.81 m wide) or the LGMG S0607E II (0.79 m wide).
- Higher ceilings in tight aisles: the 26ft narrow Zoomlion ZS0808AC; check its width and indoor and outdoor ratings on its page.
- Factory and warehouse ceilings: the 40ft LGMG S1212E-2, battery electric. Its outdoor rating is lower than its indoor rating.

Long tray runs favour machines with full-height drive, so you can move along the run without lowering where the manual, site rules and clearances allow it. Deck extensions get you over racking edges and benches, and always carry less than the main deck.
People, tools and cable loads
A platform’s rated load is a total for people, tools and materials together, and the plate also sets the maximum number of people, which can be lower outdoors. A drum of cable, a tool bag and fittings add up quickly. Work out the total weight and the number of people you need, then check both against the plate for the machine you hire, rather than assuming a size class carries “two people and gear”.
Indoor access and charging checks
- Measure the clear opening of every door on the route, with the door open, plus the turns and the stowed height. A narrow machine is not guaranteed to fit a particular doorway. See scissor lift width and site access.
- Plan overnight charging from an outlet that stays on, near where the machine parks. Site boards that are isolated at knock-off are the classic trap. The charging guide covers it.
Switchboards, risers and plant rooms
Tight plant rooms suit the slimmest machine that reaches. Working beside energised equipment, your isolation procedures rule; the machine only has to hold position precisely.
Car parks, poles and external circuits
Outside, the ground decides. Compacted or rough ground can suit the LGMG SR1018D rough terrain scissor (11.7 m working height, 454 kg). Powerlines: the non-negotiable
Electricians work nearer to overhead lines than any other trade. SafeWork NSW’s Code of Practice Work near overhead and underground electric lines (May 2026) sets approach distances by voltage and training. For an ordinary person (no electric-line hazard training), the machine, everyone in the basket and anything they hold stay at least 3 m from lines up to 132 kV, 6 m up to 330 kV and 8 m above that. Working closer needs operators and a safety observer trained in UETDREL006, a risk assessment and any conditions set by the network operator. Covered low voltage service lines to a building have their own table: 3 m for mobile plant such as an EWP. Plan so the machine’s whole reach envelope stays outside the distance, allow for line sag and sway, and treat every conductor as live until the network operator confirms isolation. If the job is anywhere near lines, tell us at quote stage and put it in the SWMS.

Shopping centres, hospitals and schools usually suit battery electric machines, non-marking tyres, tight exclusion zones and often night windows. Plan overnight charging into every after-hours program.
The compliance snapshot
No high risk work licence applies to scissor lifts in NSW; sites commonly ask for EWPA Yellow Card training and an induction. A WP class licence applies to boom-type platforms with a boom length of 11 m or more (EWP licence guide). Construction work with a fall risk of more than 2 m needs a SWMS. Wear a harness in a boom-type platform, and do a pre-start inspection each shift.
