Choosing and Comparing Equipment

Vertical Mast vs Scissor Lift: Which Is Better for Tight Access?

A narrow-access guide for warehouses, retail, facilities and fit-out teams.

Quick answer: mast lifts vary, so compare the exact model. Our narrowest machines are the Skyjack SJ12 and SJ16 mast lifts at 0.77 m wide, one person, 227 kg. Our mast lifts with a jib, the LGMG M0810JE and Haulotte Star 10, are 1 m wide, wider than our slim 19ft scissor lifts (0.79 to 0.81 m). Choose a mast when one person works at a spot, or when the jib has to reach up and over something. Choose a compact scissor lift for a run of overhead work or a bigger deck for materials. Check each model’s width, turning space, stowed height and platform rating against your site.

What a vertical mast lift is

A mast lift raises its platform on a telescoping column instead of scissor arms. Some, like the SJ12 and SJ16, go straight up with a small one-person platform. Others add a jib: the M0810JE platform can reach 3.2 m out to the side and clear obstacles up to 6.6 m high, with a turntable that turns 345 degrees with zero tail swing, and the Star 10 has a 3 m jib. The trade-off is a smaller platform and a lower capacity than a scissor lift of similar height.

Compare actual widths and turning space

Measure the narrowest point on the whole route (doorway, corridor turn, lift car) and the height of the way in, then compare:

  • Skyjack SJ12 (mast, 5.65 m working height): 0.77 m wide, 1.37 m long, 1.79 m stowed, 782 kg
  • Skyjack SJ16 (mast, 6.75 m working height): 0.77 m wide, 1.37 m long, 1.79 m stowed, 966 kg
  • LGMG S0607E II (19ft class scissor): 0.79 m wide
  • JLG ES1932 (19ft class scissor): 0.81 m wide, 1.70 m long
  • Zoomlion ZS0808AC (26ft class narrow scissor): 0.81 m wide
  • LGMG M0810JE (mast with jib): 1 m wide, 2.6 m long, 1.99 m stowed
  • Haulotte Star 10 (mast with jib, 10 m working height): 1 m wide, 2.7 m long, 1.99 m stowed, 2,677 kg

Width alone does not settle it. A corridor turn depends on the machine’s length and turning circle (1.40 m for the SJ12 and SJ16), and a lift car or low doorway depends on stowed height and weight. If the measurement is close, send it with your enquiry and we will check it against the specification sheet for that model.

Capacity and occupants by model

Platform capacity and the number of people allowed are set by each machine’s plate, and both can change indoors and outdoors. The SJ12 and SJ16 carry 227 kg, one person, on a 0.69 x 0.93 m platform. The M0810JE carries 200 kg, with up to two people indoors and one outdoors, on a 0.98 x 0.72 m platform; the Star 10 carries 200 kg. Our compact scissor lifts carry more on a larger walkable deck with an extension; their figures are on each machine page. Count people, tools and materials honestly against the plate for the machine you hire.

Where a mast lift suits the job

  • One person at a fitting in a tight space, where the SJ12 or SJ16 is narrower and lighter than a scissor lift
  • Reaching over racking, shelving, plant or a bench to work behind it (jib models)
  • Working beside a wall or column where a scissor deck cannot get close enough
  • Rotating to several work points from one parked position, with no tail swing into the aisle (M0810JE)

Where a compact scissor lift suits the job

  • Work directly overhead along a run (cable tray, ceiling fixtures), where the deck travels with the work
  • Two people with materials, panels or fittings that need a walkable deck
  • Heights beyond the straight mast lifts, through openings too narrow for the 1 m jib models

Floors and thresholds

Both machine types are built for firm, level, smooth floors on solid non-marking tyres, so ramps, expansion joints and door thresholds need planning, and neither class belongs on unsealed or uneven ground. Light machines still put high local loads through small wheels: the SJ12 sheet gives a local floor load of 696 kPa with rated load. Outdoors or on uneven ground the answer changes: see the tracked scissor lift hire guide.

Compact does not remove the rules

The smallest elevating work platform still needs a pre-start inspection, a floor that carries it, a trained operator and a rescue plan. The M0810JE and Star 10 are boom-type platforms with a short jib; the NSW high risk work licence class for booms depends on boom length, so check the EWP licence guide and your site’s requirements, which commonly include an EWPA Yellow Card and a harness in a boom-type platform.

Selection checklist

  1. Narrowest access measured: width, height and the turns
  2. Work point: directly overhead, or behind or over something?
  3. Work-point height against each machine’s working height
  4. People, tools and materials against each machine’s plate
  5. Floor: smooth slab, thresholds and joints, or unsealed
  6. Indoor only, or some outdoor work (outdoor ratings are lower)

FAQs

Is a vertical mast lift narrower than a scissor lift? It depends on the model. Our SJ12 and SJ16 mast lifts are 0.77 m wide, narrower than our slim 19ft scissor lifts at 0.79 to 0.81 m. Our M0810JE and Star 10 jib mast lifts are 1 m wide, wider than those scissor lifts.

Will a mast lift fit through a doorway? Measure the clear opening with the door open and compare it with the exact model width plus a margin. A 1 m jib mast lift will not pass a typical personnel door.

When is a mast lift better than a scissor lift? When one person works at a spot in a tight space, or when the work is behind or over an obstacle and a jib’s side reach saves moving the machine.

How many people can go on a mast lift? The SJ12 and SJ16 take one person. The M0810JE plate allows two people indoors and one outdoors, within 200 kg.

Which carries more tools? A scissor lift, which has a larger walkable deck and an extension.
