Access Equipment for Warehouse Maintenance

Racking, lighting, sprinklers, ducting and cameras are steady overhead work on a finished floor in an occupied building. That combination points at one class of machine.

Quick answer

For most warehouse maintenance the right machine is an electric scissor lift: no exhaust, non-marking tyres, a platform big enough for two people and their fittings, and a footprint that fits a standard aisle. Pick the size from the height of the fittings, then check three widths: the narrowest door or gate on the route, the clear aisle at the work position, and the turning space. Where the aisle is too tight or only one person needs to go up, a vertical mast lift is the better answer.

Warehouse maintenance is a repeat job, not a one-off. Lights, sprinkler heads, smoke detectors, racking inspections, signage, cameras, data cabling, ducting and roller door servicing all sit above head height in a building that is usually still operating. The machine has to be quiet, clean, compact and safe to run near people who are working.

This guide is for facility managers, maintenance contractors and trades quoting recurring work in warehouses and distribution centres. It matches the common tasks to the machines that do them, and lists what to measure before booking.

Which machine suits warehouse racking and lighting maintenance?

An electric scissor lift, sized to the height of the fittings. A 19ft machine reaches about 7.8 metres working height, which covers most standard racking runs, low bay lighting and services in a single storey warehouse. For higher bays, a 26ft narrow machine reaches 10 metres indoors on the same 0.81 metre footprint, and a 40ft machine reaches 14 metres indoors.

The advantage over a ladder or a platform trolley is not just the height. You climb once, carry the fittings up with you and work along the run, rather than repositioning and re-climbing every few metres.

Figures are from the manufacturer specification sheets on file. Indoor and outdoor working heights differ on the taller machines because wind exposure governs the outdoor rating.

How high do I actually need to reach?

Measure to the fitting, not to the roof. The underside of the sprinkler pipe, the top of the racking beam, the light fitting itself. Then choose a machine whose working height covers it with margin.

Working height already includes about two metres for a person standing on the platform and reaching. The number in the machine name is the platform height in feet, which is a different figure. There is a full explanation in working height versus platform height.

Will the machine fit down my aisle?

A 0.79 to 0.81 metre machine works comfortably in a clear aisle of about a metre. What catches people out is what is in the aisle rather than the aisle itself: pallets overhanging the racking line, stacked stock, a pallet jack parked at the end, or a racking upright at the corner the machine has to turn around.

Measure the narrowest point of the actual route, with the aisle in its normal working state. The JLG ES1932 turns with a zero inside radius and 1.7 metres outside; the Zoomlion ZS0808AC is 0.1 metres inside and 2.1 metres outside. That outside figure is the one that decides whether it gets around the corner.

Will it fit through the roller door or the personnel door?

A standard single personnel door opening is around 0.82 metres, so a 0.79 or 0.81 metre machine passes with care. Check the stowed height as well: the ES1932 is 1.99 metres stowed and 1.63 metres with the rails folded, and the ZS0808AC is 2.4 metres stowed and 1.9 metres folded.

If the machine has to come in under a mezzanine, through a lift car or under a roller door that does not fully retract, the folded rail height is usually what makes it possible. Will it mark the floor?

No. Every electric scissor lift in the fleet runs non-marking tyres and produces no exhaust, which is why they are the default machine for occupied warehouses, retail back of house and food and pharmaceutical facilities.

Sealed and polished concrete is what these machines are designed for. A diesel machine indoors is a different question entirely and one we would talk you out of.

Can the slab or the mezzanine take the weight?

On a ground floor slab in a purpose built warehouse, almost always. On a mezzanine, a suspended floor, an older slab or above a basement car park, it is a real question and it needs the engineer or the building documentation, not a guess.

The weights are in the table above: 1,550 kilograms for a 19ft machine up to 2,940 kilograms for a 40ft. That load arrives through four small contact patches, so the point loading matters more than the total. The JLG ES1932 specification records a ground pressure of 8.0 kilograms per square centimetre. Can we work while the warehouse is operating?

Yes, and it is the normal case. It needs a physical exclusion zone under and around the platform, agreed separation from forklift and pedestrian routes, and someone at ground level who knows the machine is up there.

Talk to the site about racking work in particular. Working above a live pick face is a traffic management problem before it is an access problem.

Where does the machine charge, and how long does it last?

Any standard 240 volt outlet. A full overnight charge covers a normal working day of lifting and driving for the compact machines. The ES1932 runs four 6 volt 220 amp hour batteries, the S0607E II a 24 volt 225 amp hour pack.

Plan where the lead goes before the machine arrives. In a large warehouse the nearest outlet to the work area is often nowhere near it, and a machine parked overnight in an aisle it cannot be charged in is a lost day. If your site has no accessible power, say so when you book.

What about a second shift or after-hours work?

Charge into meal breaks and shift changes rather than waiting for the pack to run flat, or hire a second machine so one is always on charge. For a sustained multi-shift program a second machine is usually cheaper than the downtime.

For recurring maintenance programs, long term hire rates are lower than daily. Tell us the pattern of the work and we will price it as a program rather than as a series of one-off hires.

What can we take up on the platform?

Between 230 and 320 kilograms depending on the machine, and that figure is people, tools and materials combined. Two people with hand tools is the realistic load on a compact machine; two people plus a box of fittings needs checking against the rating.

Platform extensions carry less than the main deck: the ES1932 deck is rated to 230 kilograms but its 0.87 metre extension to 120 kilograms. Do not stand on the extension with the materials.

When is a vertical mast lift the better machine?

When only one person needs to go up, the load is light, and the space is genuinely tight. A vertical mast lift is narrower and lighter than a scissor lift of the same height and it turns in less room.

How do long term and multi-machine warehouse hires work?

The same way as a single hire, planned further ahead. For a shutdown or a fit-out we will confirm the machines, the delivery sequence and the charging arrangements before anything leaves the yard, because two machines arriving at a site with one accessible outlet is a problem that only appears on the day.
