Your total is built from five drivers: size band, power type, hire period, delivery, and site access. Driver 1: size band
Bigger machine, bigger rate — and bigger truck. The bands that matter: 19ft electric (the workhorse, cheapest band), 22–26ft (tracked and narrow units — specialist access, modest premium), 32ft rough terrain (diesel, site work), 40ft electric (top of the scissor range). Driver 2: power and machine type
Electric slab scissors sit at the value end. Diesel rough-terrain and tracked machines carry premiums for capability — 4×4 drive and outriggers, or crawler tracks and self-levelling. Driver 3: hire period
Daily, weekly, monthly and long-term rates step down per day as the period grows — a week costs far less than five separate days, and long-term rates are quoted case-by-case. Two planning rules: book the real duration (off-hiring early rarely refunds the rate step), and if the job might stretch, ask for the weekly rate up front. Driver 4: delivery and pickup

Driver 5: site access and conditions
Anything that slows delivery or requires special handling shows up in the quote: locked sites and induction wait times, basement or upper-level positioning, long pushes from truck to work area, stairs/ramps, after-hours windows. Say it up front — surprises on the day cost more than honesty in the enquiry.

Why won’t anyone quote one price for scissor lift hire? Because size, power, period, delivery and access genuinely change the number. A quote without those questions is a guess with a margin hidden in it.
Is weekly hire better value than daily? Per day, almost always — the rate steps down as the period grows. Book the real duration rather than stacking day rates.
Are electric scissors cheaper to hire? Generally the 19ft electrics are the value band. Specialist machines (tracked, narrow, RT) carry capability premiums.
What adds the most to the total? Jumping a size band unnecessarily, freight for heavy machines, and site friction (inductions, timing windows, difficult access).
Does delivery really matter that much? For short hires it can rival the hire itself — a 4-tonne machine needs a proper truck both ways. Suburb and access drive it.
Will poor site access increase cost? Yes — waiting time, special equipment or split deliveries all cost real money. Declaring it up front keeps it minimal.
Is the cheapest machine the best value? Only if it completes the job. A machine that’s too short, too wide or wrong for the ground costs a second hire plus lost days.
Do I pay for the machine while it charges overnight? The hire period covers the days you have it — charging happens within them. Plan an outlet; flat batteries lose you mornings, which is the real cost.
