Short-Term or Longer Hire: How to Plan the Hire Length

A few days, a few weeks or the whole job: how hire length changes the quote, the delivery and the machine you should book.

Quick answer

Book short when the work is a single visit with a fixed finish. Book longer when the machine will be used on and off across a project, because delivery and collection happen once and longer hires carry our lowest rates. Tell us the real start date and your best guess at the finish, and we quote the hire and delivery together for that period.

What changes with the hire length

  • The rate. Longer hires carry our lowest published rates. A short hire is quoted for your dates.
  • Delivery and collection. These happen once per hire whatever its length, so on a short hire they are a bigger share of the total.
  • Idle days. On a longer hire the machine waits on site between trades. On a short one you may pay for a second delivery if the work comes back.

When a short hire makes sense

One visit with a clear finish: a ceiling repair, a sign install, a light fitting change-over, a single inspection. Ask for the dates you need, and say if the finish could slip so we can tell you how an extension works.

When to book longer

Fit-outs, warehouse racking, services rough-in and multi-trade jobs, where the machine is used on and off for weeks. Keeping one machine on site usually beats booking it three times. Our long-term hire page lists the longer-hire rates and the conditions that come with them.

Planning questions to answer first

  1. When does the work at height actually start, not the site start?
  2. Which trades need the machine, and do they overlap?
  3. Is there secure, level storage on site between shifts, and somewhere to charge an electric machine?
  4. Will the access or the height change as the build progresses?
  5. Who calls the off-hire, and how much notice will they give? See collection on a staged handover.

Ending the hire

Off-hire is booked with the team. The hire runs until the machine is off-hired, so tell us as soon as the finish date firms up. Damage, fuel and waiting time are charged as they happen; there are no insurance or environmental levies added to the quote.

Next step

Send the start date, your best guess at the finish and the site suburb. We quote the machine and the delivery together for that period. Not sure which machine? Help me choose shortlists it from the job.
