Overview

About the Brian James DP35 Plant Trailer

The Brian James DP35 is a 3.5 tonne ATM tandem-axle plant trailer for moving scissor lifts and other small machines. Figures from the Brian James Digger Plant 3.5 t sheet: 3,500 kg gross (ATM), 1.7 m internal bed width, 0.4 m bed height, 14° loading angle, 2.32 m wide overall and 5.12 m long, on 12″ wheels. Load capacity is about 2,770 to 2,820 kg and the bed is 3.2 m or 3.7 m long depending on the version, so the compliance plate on the trailer governs.

What is the DP35 used for?

Taking a machine to site yourself instead of paying for a truck delivery, or keeping a machine with you when the crew moves between several sites in a week. The low bed and 14° loading angle suit tracked and wheeled scissor lifts that drive up the ramps under their own power.

It is paired with these machines as a ready-made combo:

Can I tow it?

Customer pickup is approved for each hire after we check three things:

  1. Tow vehicle. Its braked towing capacity and tow ball rating must cover the loaded trailer, and it needs a working electric brake controller.
  2. Licence. A licence that covers the vehicle and trailer combination.
  3. Loaded weight. The machine plus the trailer must sit within the trailer’s ATM and your vehicle’s limits. We give you the machine weight from its plate.

The full checklist, including tie-down and loading, is in picking up a scissor lift with a plant trailer. If towing does not suit, we deliver by truck from Berkshire Park; see delivery and site access.

Other trailers

The Brian James Eco Plant 2 and the Brian James 3717-35-2-12 are also available. Compare them on the trailer hire page.

Customers who hired plant trailers & towing

Very nice and kind We got a issue about the tow ball Luckily worker there that day , helped us to remove trailer from our Ute

Yau DingGoogle ReviewSep 2026via Google

Equip Hire replied: Thanks for the kind words, Yau! We really appreciate your repeat electric scissor lift and trailer combo hires. Glad our team could help sort out the tow ball issue and get the trailer unhitched from your ute. If a future job calls for tracked scissor lift hire or a self levelling scissor lift, we’d be happy to help you choose a suitable machine. Thanks again for your continued support of Equip Hire!

I don’t usually leave reviews, but the service provided by Kay and Shev was amazing. I hired a tracked 19ft scissor lift and the whole process was easy from start to finish. The scissor lift was in great condition, clean, well maintained and worked exactly as it should. I decided to go with pickup as I ws in the area and it went smooth and everything was ready to go when I arrived. I’ve hired equipment plenty of times before where the trailer ends upp being the annoying part, either old, rough or not set up properly, but that wasn’t the case here at all. The trailer provided was in great condition and made transporting the machine simple and safe. Highly recommend Equip Hire for quick and reliable access equipment hire.

Equip Hire replied: Thanks heaps, Sahel. Really appreciate the detailed review, especially the note about the trailer, that makes a big difference when picking up a tracked 19 ft scissor lift. Glad Kay and Shev had everything ready and the whole hire was smooth from start to finish. If you need scissor lift hire, tracked scissor lift hire, or access equipment hire around Penrith, Minchinbury, Parramatta or wider Sydney again, we will look after you.

We hired a 32ft rough terrain scissor lift from Equip Hire for an outdoor job and it did exactly what we needed. The machine was clean, well maintained, and handled uneven ground without any trouble. Pickup and delivery were straightforward and the team was easy to deal with, no mucking arounnd. They explained th controls clearly and made sure everything was ready to go before it arrived on site. If you need scissor lift hire for construction or maintenance work, especially rough terrain access equipment, Equip Hire is a solid option. Would use them again

Equip Hire replied: Cheers, Shiv. Thanks for the cracking photos of the 32 ft rough terrain scissor lift on site, they look mint. Great to hear it stayed steady on the uneven ground and the delivery and pickup were easy. If you need access equipment hire in Sydney again, from scissor lift hire Sydney to a boom lift for extra reach, the Equip Hire crew has you covered.

Best-fit jobs and sites

Good to confirm: Brian James Digger Plant 3.5 t sheet figures: 3,500 kg gross (ATM), 1.7 m internal bed width, 0.4 m bed height, 14° loading angle, 2.32 m wide, 5.12 m long, twin axle on 12" wheels. Load capacity is about 2,770 to 2,820 kg and the bed 3.2 m or 3.7 m long depending on the version, so the trailer's own compliance plate governs. Customer pickup is approved per hire after we check the tow vehicle, licence and towing capacity. An online listing cannot replace a site assessment, so tell us the job and we will confirm suitability.

Getting it to site

Swipe

Delivered by us

Quoted by suburb, machine and access. We plan the truck, the unloading space and any overhead hazards before the run, tell us about docks, tight driveways and height limits when you book.

Customer pickup, confirmation required

Customer pickup has not been confirmed for this machine. Delivery is quoted together with the hire; if you would rather collect, ask the team and they will confirm whether a trailer combination is approved for it.

Delivery, access and running

What we need from you, and what we take care of.

Swipe

Delivery

Quoted by suburb, site access and transport requirements, the machine and the delivery are quoted together for your dates.

Tow vehicle and licence

Tell us the vehicle you will tow with and its braked towing capacity. We check the vehicle, the coupling and the loaded combination mass against your licence before the trailer leaves the yard.

Hire period

Hire runs from delivery or pickup until off-hire is confirmed. Rates are quoted for your dates, suburb and machine together, see our hire terms for responsibilities during the hire.

Not sure it will fit?

Send your suburb, your dates and the tightest access width. We will confirm the machine and quote the delivery with it.

Towing safely

Checks before you tow

A plant trailer is checked as a towed load, not as a machine. Our staff restrain the load at the yard; these are the checks that keep it safe on the road.

What counts as the record

Ticking here is a memory aid on your phone, nothing is stored. The trailer’s compliance plate and your own check are the record. Based on the manufacturer’s daily check requirements and SafeWork NSW guidance for this kind of equipment.

Before you tow

Before you collect

The four things to sort before you arrive at the depot.

Swipe

1

Check the tow vehicle

Braked towing capacity, tow ball rating and the plated GCM must cover the loaded trailer. Bring the numbers, we check them before the trailer leaves the yard.

2

Check the licence

A car licence covers most 3.5 t plant trailers, but the combination mass and your licence conditions decide it. Say so if you are unsure.

3

Plan where it unloads

A firm, level spot with room to drop the ramps and drive the machine off straight. Not a slope, not a soft verge.

4

Plan the route

Height limits, tight turns and steep driveways on the way. A loaded plant trailer does not reverse like a box trailer.

Avoid

Towing mistakes we see

What most often stops a pickup at the gate or causes trouble on the road.

Swipe

Guessing the tow rating

A vehicle that tows a caravan is not necessarily rated for a 3.5 t plant trailer. Read the plate, not the brochure.

Loading on the tail

Weight behind the axles lifts the tow ball and the trailer will sway. The machine sits centred, load forward of the axles.

Two straps

A machine is restrained at four rated points every time. Our staff restrain it at the yard; keep it that way after any stop.

Unloading on a slope

Ramps on a grade change the angle the machine has to climb. Find level ground first.

Questions about hiring this machine

What is this trailer used for?

The Brian James DP35 is a plant trailer for carrying a machine such as a scissor lift behind your own vehicle. Which machines it is approved to carry is decided machine by machine; a machine page says when it is approved for pickup on this trailer.

What do the trailer and load weigh?

ATM 3,500 kg. Your vehicle's towing capacity and towball download rating must both cover the loaded trailer.

What does my vehicle need to tow it?

A towbar and towball rated for the loaded trailer, a vehicle towing capacity above the loaded mass, working trailer lights, and safety chains connected. We check the vehicle and coupling at collection before the trailer leaves, and the machine is secured with tie-downs for travel.

Can it be delivered, or can I collect it?

Delivery is from our Berkshire Park depot. Delivery is quoted with the machine for your suburb, site access and hire dates. Customer pickup has not been approved for this machine, so plan on delivery.

For delivery, the truck needs a firm, clear area to unload close to the work, and someone on site to sign for the machine.

What does the hire rate cover?
  • $50 + GST ($55 inc GST) per day, for hires of 3 months or more

Transport is quoted separately for your suburb and site. A longer-term rate applies only when the hire runs for its minimum period; a shorter hire is quoted at the rate for its actual length.

What licence do I need to tow it, and to use the machine?

Your driver licence must cover the vehicle and loaded trailer you are towing. The machine itself needs the training described on its own page.

What do I need to get a quote?

The machine, your dates, the site suburb and anything that limits access: the narrowest opening, headroom, ground type and how high the work is. The team confirms availability for your dates and that the machine suits the site, then sends the quote with delivery. Nothing is booked until we confirm.

How do I extend the hire or arrange collection?

A hire can be extended. Call or email the team with your hire reference and the new finish date, and earlier is better because the machine may be committed to another job. Extra time is confirmed with you, and the rate for the longer period is confirmed with it: a change to the booking can mean the rate is revised, a minimum hire applies, or the correct rate for the actual hire period is used.

Hire charges run until the machine is properly off-hired with Equip Hire and is available for collection, clean, accessible and safe to collect. To off-hire you contact Equip Hire directly and get an off-hire number or confirmation back. Stopping work, leaving the machine on site, telling another contractor or assuming we know the job is finished does not end the hire. Charges stop at the confirmed off-hire, not on the day the truck happens to arrive, but they can continue if the machine is not accessible or ready when we come for it.

When would a different machine suit better?

If the height, width or ground does not suit this machine, tell us the job and we will suggest the right one.
