When narrow machines earn their keep

Standard electric scissors are roughly 1.15 m wide. Plenty of buildings have door openings, corridors, lift cars and rack aisles tighter than that. A narrow scissor, at under a metre wide, exists for exactly these routes. The trade-offs are a smaller platform, lower platform capacity, and sometimes a taller stowed height, so treat narrow machines as a fit-for-access choice rather than an upgrade.

Measure the route, not just the door

Walk from the delivery point to the work position and record the narrowest and lowest points along the way. Common surprises:

  • Door hardware and reveals reduce the clear opening below the nominal door size
  • Corridor turns can need more width than the corridor itself
  • Ceiling fixtures, ducts and door heads limit stowed height
  • Lift cars have both door width and internal depth limits, plus a load limit

Practical limitations

  • Smaller platforms carry fewer tools and less material per lift. Budget more up-and-down cycles.
  • Capacity limits are real: one person plus tools can approach the limit on some narrow models.
