Quick answer: the environment decides. Finished floors, occupied buildings, night work → electric. Unsealed ground, open construction sites, higher outdoor reach → diesel rough terrain. If the surface is soft, landscaped or narrow, a third option — the electric tracked scissor — often beats both.
Emissions and noise
Electric scissors produce no exhaust at the point of use and run near-silent — which is why they’re the default in shopping centres, hospitals, offices, schools and any after-hours work with people nearby. Diesel engines (the SR1018D runs an 18.5kW Kubota) are for open air: exhaust and noise rule them out of enclosed, occupied spaces.
Floors vs terrain
- Electric slab scissors ride on solid non-marking tyres and are built for hard, level surfaces. Our JLG ES1932 and LGMG S0607E II are 0.79–0.81m wide and glide through doorways onto finished slab.
- Diesel rough-terrain scissors carry chunky foam-filled tyres, four-wheel drive, an oscillating axle and real gradeability — the LGMG SR1018D manages 35% stowed and adds auto-levelling outriggers for set-up on imperfect ground.
- A slab machine on site ground bogs or hits its tilt cut-out; an RT machine on a polished floor is oversized, heavy (4,330kg) and unnecessary.
Capacity and deck size
Diesel RT machines usually win the load contest: the SR1018D carries 454kg and up to 4 people indoors (2 outdoors) on a 2.79m deck with a 1.52m extension. The electrics carry 230kg (19ft, two people indoors) to 320kg (40ft). For steel fixing, formwork and heavy trade kits outdoors, that margin matters; for lighting and services indoors, 230kg is usually plenty.
Height ratings differ outdoors
Wind exposure changes what a machine may legally do. The LGMG S1212E-2 is rated 14m working height indoors but 9.5m outdoors — same machine, different envelope. The diesel SR1018D is rated 11.7m in outdoor conditions. If your job is outdoor height work, check the outdoor column of the spec sheet, not the headline. More in Wind Limits and Weather for EWPs.
Runtime: charging vs refuelling
- Electric: plan charging like a trade, not an afterthought — a standard 10A outlet overnight (8 hours continuous) is the rule across our electric fleet. Multi-shift or high-cycle work needs a charging window in the schedule. See the charging guide.
- Diesel: refuel and go (the SR1018D holds 53L). Confirm refuelling arrangements for longer hires, and never refuel indoors.
Maintenance trade-offs on hire
Hirers don’t service machines, but duty cycles still bite: batteries left flat overnight cut the next day short; diesel units need daily fluid and leak checks in the pre-start; outdoor grime hides damage. Two minutes of checks each morning protects your programme either way.
The third option: electric tracked

Common mistakes
- Hiring diesel “for power” on a job that’s entirely on slab — you pay in weight, width and site rules.
- Hiring electric for unsealed ground because it’s cheaper — it won’t get to the work point.
- Ignoring the outdoor height rating and losing a day when the machine can’t legally reach.
- No charging plan on night works — the machine is flat by the second shift.

Which is better indoors? Electric — quiet, fume-free, non-marking tyres, and sized for doorways (0.79–0.81m on our 19ft units).
Which is better for rough terrain? Diesel RT — 4×4 drive, oscillating axle, 35% gradeability and outriggers on our SR1018D. Slab electrics don’t belong on site ground.
Do electric scissor lifts have enough capacity? For most indoor trades, yes: 230–320kg across our electric range. If you need more, the diesel RT carries 454kg.
Is diesel always more powerful? It’s more capable on bad ground, not “better”. On slab, the electric does the same work more cleanly and cheaply.
Can electric scissor lifts be used outdoors? Many are rated for it with limits — often fewer occupants (1 outdoors on our 19ft units) and lower height (9.5m vs 14m on the 40ft). Check the model’s outdoor rating and wind limit.
Are diesel scissor lifts cheaper to hire? Usually the opposite — bigger machine, bigger transport. Price follows size, tenure, delivery and demand; see what drives hire cost.
Do electric machines need daily charging? Plan for overnight charging every night on the hire — 8 hours continuous on a standard outlet keeps the machine ready and protects the batteries.
Which type leaves fewer floor marks? Electric slab scissors with non-marking tyres — that’s what they’re fitted with across our fleet.
Is diesel safer in bad weather? No machine is made safer by bad weather. Wind limits, saturated ground and visibility affect both — see Wind Limits and Weather.
Which suits shopping centres and hospitals? Electric, and usually the smallest unit that reaches: quiet, clean, tight-turning, and welcome on finished floors.
