About the Genie Z-34/22 Articulating Boom Lift

The Genie Z-34/22 is a diesel articulating (knuckle) boom lift with 12.62m working height, 10.62m platform height, 6.78m horizontal reach and 4.57m up-and-over clearance. A Kubota D-1105 three-cylinder diesel gives 19.4kW (26hp) and 45% gradeability on foam-filled 10×16.5 tyres. The 1.42m steel platform takes 227kg and rotates 180 degrees; the 1.22m jib works through 139 degrees for reaching in behind structures. Turntable rotates 355 degrees non-continuous, with 240V power to the platform.

Licence: the boom-length rule

In NSW a WP-class high-risk work licence is required to operate a boom-type platform with a boom length of 11 metres or more. The threshold is the boom length, not the working height or the platform height. Below it, the operator must still be trained (EWPA Yellow Card, boom class). A harness on a short lanyard is required in the basket at any boom length.

Measure the route, not the door

Every gate, corridor and lift on the way to the work area. Handles, hinges, bollards and stored materials all eat clearance.

Walk the ground

Compacted and trafficable beats “looks firm”. Mark soft spots, trenches and services before the machine tracks over them.

Plan the set-up and the swing

Firm, level ground where the machine stands, room for the tail swing and the counterweight, and the basket path drawn from that spot to the work: up, over and back in.

Power lines and wind

Keep the boom outside the exclusion zone for overhead lines and know the machine’s wind rating before you book an exposed job.

Measure to the actual task height, then choose the machine. Nothing added “just in case”.

Using the nominal door size

An 820 mm door leaf is not 820 mm of clear opening once the stop and hardware are counted. Measure the gap.

Sizing on working height alone

A boom is chosen on outreach at the height you need. The envelope chart, not the headline figure, tells you whether the basket gets there.

Skipping the harness

A harness on a short lanyard is required in a boom basket every time it moves, at any boom length.

Leaving inductions to delivery morning

Shopping centres and managed sites need the paperwork approved before the truck arrives.
