# Access Equipment for HVAC Contractors

Quick answer: HVAC work splits into two access problems. Indoors (duct runs, fan coil units, grilles, controls) is straight-up work over a slab: an electric scissor lift sized to the ceiling. Rooftop plant behind parapets, screens and pipe racks is up-and-over work: an articulating boom, checked against its reach chart from the actual parking position. In both cases add up the total platform load first; HVAC crews often carry more equipment aloft than other trades.

## Indoor ductwork and fit-outs

- Duct, pipe and FCU installs to about 7.5 m: 19ft electric scissor lifts such as the JLG ES1932 (0.81 m wide) and LGMG S0607E II (0.79 m wide). Both carry 230 kg on the platform and 120 kg on a 0.9 m extension deck. Measure the narrowest clear opening on the route before assuming either fits a door.
- High ceilings and risers to about 13.5 m indoors: the LGMG S1212E-2 40ft electric, 320 kg on the platform and 120 kg on its extension deck, 1.19 m wide and 2,940 kg.
- Service corridors and back-of-house: the Zoomlion ZS0808AC 26ft narrow, 0.81 m wide, 10 m working height indoors and 7.8 m outdoors.

On larger installs, two machines are common: one crew per work zone rather than trades queuing for one lift.

## Ductwork load and platform limits

The platform rating covers people, tools and materials together. Two technicians with tools, gauges, a brazing kit, a recovery cylinder and pipe stock can approach a 230 kg rating quickly, and the extension deck has its own lower limit (120 kg on the machines above). Weigh the kit once and use the figure on every job.

A scissor platform can carry materials only within its rating, inside the guardrails and where the manual allows. Long duct sections that overhang the rails, or loads that need lifting into position, are a materials-handling task: use a duct lift, hoist or other approved lifting method, not the EWP platform.

## Reach over rooftop obstructions

Condensers, rooftop units and exhaust fans sit behind parapets, screens and pipe racks, which is articulating boom work. Our LGMG AR11J 34ft articulating boom has these figures on its LGMG specification sheet: 12.75 m maximum working height, 6.78 m maximum horizontal outreach, 5.32 m up-and-over height, 270 kg platform capacity with a maximum of 2 people, 355° turntable rotation, 12.5 m/s maximum wind speed, 1.85 m wide and 5,400 kg.

### Reach chart example

Those maximums are not available at the same time. On the AR11J's working range chart, the highest basket position sits close to the machine, and the 6.78 m outreach is reached only at a much lower height. So for a unit 4 m behind a parapet, the question is not "is 12.75 m enough" but "where on the chart is a point 4 m out, at the height I need, above the parapet line, from where the machine can actually park". Mark the parking position, the parapet height and setback and the work point on the chart, and keep a margin. If it does not fit, a taller boom or a different set-up position is needed. See how to read a boom lift reach chart and boom lift hire around awnings: what to measure.

Check where the machine parks: the ground, awnings and landscaping between the truck and the wall. The AR11J's sheet allows only a small slope when working (3° / 4.5°), so the set-up position must be close to level. If the unit itself must be lifted, that is crane work: an EWP carries people and hand tools, not slung loads.

## Working on the roof or over the parapet

Short service visits to a roof with safe access (internal stairs, walkways, edge protection) may not need a machine at all; the falls code prefers existing solid construction. A boom earns its place where there is no compliant roof access, the work face is the outside of the plant screen, or equipment must move up and over repeatedly.

## Shutdowns and maintenance rounds

Shutdown windows punish slow access. Have machines delivered and pre-start checked before the window opens, confirm charging points for overnight work, plan one machine per work zone, and run the rescue plan at the first pre-start. For plant rooms, measure the door and corridor widths first.

## Weather and the exposed roof edge

Rooftop work is wind-exposed. The AR11J's maximum wind speed is 12.5 m/s on its sheet, and some scissor lifts have a lower outdoor rating than indoors (the 40ft S1212E-2 is 14 m indoors and 9.5 m outdoors). Set stop-work triggers before the shift with the wind and weather guide, and recheck saturated ground after storms with the ground conditions guide.

## FAQs

### What machine suits rooftop HVAC plant?

An articulating boom whose reach chart covers the work point above the parapet from a level, firm parking position. Measure the parapet height, setback and parking position first.

### Are scissor lifts useful for HVAC?

Yes, for indoor duct, pipe, FCU, grille and controls work directly above a slab.

### When does a vertical mast lift make sense?

For single-person tasks in spaces too tight for a scissor lift. See vertical mast vs scissor lift; check the actual machine's width, as not every mast lift is narrower than a narrow scissor.

### Can I lift the AC unit with the EWP?

No. EWPs carry people and their tools within the rated load, not slung or overhanging loads. Unit lifts need a crane or hoist.

### Are diesel machines OK inside a plant room?

No. Exhaust in enclosed spaces rules them out. Use electric machines indoors.
